One of the function of this blog and its accompanying Patreon is to reveal all the behind the scenes stuff on whatever art or projects I am working on. So, I thought I would share with you all what I am currently working on with my Photography. Please excuse that these are all self-portraits but it’s just the easiest way to experiment without driving other people insane.
SO, my monochrome images aren’t doing that well in the Club Competitions. For the most part, they just OK, so I wanted to spend some time trying to get better at it.
One of the things I am trying is to preview all the images and the viewfinder in camera in Black and White. I shoot RAW so the final images have all the colour information, it’s just the preview screen that is in black and white. This was suggested by Matt Granger in a recent video course I did of his. I have to say I find it very helpful in seeing more clearly my tonal range and exposure.
I got an hour or so yesterday to get some photos taken, which was great. What I present here is me trying to experiment and see what I like and what I don’t along with trying to work out the best settings and lighting to get the best results. I am aware that the photos are far from perfect, please know that.
Towards the end I have added some colour images taken at the same time just to contrast. The big influence here is Anton Corbijn and so I stuck to a square crop for all of the photos and added a very slight sepia tone too.
These were all done with the Nikon D5600 and the 35mm lens but I did have the extra wide angle adaptor on for most of them. I did some colour correcting and the monochrome conversion in LIGHTROOM but not huge edits. Other than colour and exposure changes this is pretty much what came out of the camera.
